The Power of a Mens Bible Study: It’s Where Men Find Out They’re Not Alone

The Power of a Mens Bible Study

To understand why men need to be part of a men’s Bible study, just look to R.T. Phillips. He was president of the Christian men's movement Promise Keepers during its heyday when it brought tens of thousands of men together in stadium events in the 1990s. While those events were great at inspiring thousands of men to commit themselves to God, Phillips says they were not as effective “with a deeper level of understanding of what the heart of man is crying out for."

Men struggle with isolation and disqualification

Phillips himself struggled with this after his ministry with Promise Keepers ended. When he no longer had the role of president of a massive ministry and the validation of partnering with God in a great movement, he began "a journey around a real shift in who I am and what validates me as a man."

Phillips is now committed to ministering to men through his Bible studies for men called CORE Redeemed and CORE Transformed, which have a fresh approach that touch what he says are the two primary struggles of men: isolation and disqualification.

Men need genuine connection

"Stadium events, catalytic events are awesome," Phillips says. "Promise Keepers was a part of that; Sunday mornings are, in a sense, kind of about that. But it's really the power of community, of genuine connection, about being real. And the church subconsciously reinforces the idea that my spirituality is judged based upon my obedience, and the things that I'm doing well, and then I'm disqualified when I struggle."

Phillips and his team developed CORE Bible studies for men that use "the power of story to create environments where men have permission to be real about their own story. As they can engage with other guys, they find out they're not alone," he says.

And therein lies the power of a men’s Bible study…it’s where men find out they’re not alone.
