Steal This Idea: Turn a Simple Bible Giveaway into a Shared Church Story

Steal This Idea: Turn a Simple Bible Giveaway into a Shared Church Story

When your church hands someone a Bible, you're giving more than a book.

You're placing God's Word into someone's hands at a moment that could change the course of their life.

Many churches choose Bibles for outreach events, guest welcome gifts, baptisms, mission trips, and discipleship milestones. But some churches are taking it a step further by creating custom Bibles designed specifically for their congregation and community.

Shoreline Church is one example.

Spotlight on Shoreline Church

Your Church's Anniversary Is Also a Discipleship Opportunity

When Shoreline Church in Monterey, California, began planning their 30th Anniversary celebration, they knew they wanted to create a keepsake that celebrated their history while pointing people toward a deeper relationship with Jesus and the future God has for their church.

They ended up creating something that became both a commemorative piece and a ministry tool.

Alicia Lowery from ChurchSource sat down with Communications Director Donna Brown to share Shoreline's story.

Alicia: Donna, what was on your heart as you began planning this milestone celebration for your church?

Donna: We wanted to create something that reflected our church's identity and our mission, which is to help as many people as possible become totally committed to Jesus Christ. We wanted to give people something that would commemorate Shoreline Church's 30th Anniversary while also serving as a meaningful tool for spiritual growth. Of course, the Bible is the best thing we could give people for their spiritual growth, so it had to be a Bible.

Alicia: It was a pleasure to work with you and your team to create this keepsake Bible. How did you feel about the process and the final result?

Donna: We were thrilled with the final Bibles. They looked beautiful, felt high quality, and perfectly captured the significance of this milestone in our church's history. The custom design process was surprisingly easy and collaborative. The team was responsive, helpful, and made it simple.

Alicia: I'm so happy to hear that. We try to make it as fun and easy as possible. How have these Bibles been used in your church community?

Donna: The Bibles have become much more than an anniversary keepsake. We've used them to encourage regular Bible engagement and to remind our church family of God's faithfulness over the past 30 years. They have been given to longtime members, new believers, and ministry leaders, creating a shared connection around God's Word. Many people commented on how special it felt to receive a Bible created specifically for our congregation.

Alicia: Is there anything else you'd like to share with other churches who may be considering a custom Bible?

Donna: One of the things we appreciated most was that the custom Bible became both a commemorative piece and a ministry tool. Thirty years from now, we hope people will still be reading, studying, and sharing these Bibles while remembering God's faithfulness through the generations at Shoreline Church.

Shoreline's story highlights something more churches are beginning to discover: a custom Bible isn't just a commemorative gift. It's a ministry resource that keeps pointing people back to God's Word long after the event is over.

Why Consider a Custom Bible?

Most outreach Bibles serve a single purpose: getting God's Word into people's hands.

Custom Bibles can do that—and more.

Because they feature your church's name, logo, ministry theme, or commemorative design, they become a lasting connection point between the recipient and your church family.

Whether you're celebrating a church anniversary, launching a community outreach initiative, welcoming new members, or equipping ministry leaders, a custom Bible can help make the moment even more meaningful.

Here are a few reasons churches choose custom Bibles:

1. Create a Lasting First Impression

People often remember who gave them their first Bible.

A custom Bible helps reinforce that connection. Long after an outreach event is over, recipients continue to see your church's name and message every time they open God's Word.

2. Celebrate Significant Ministry Moments

Church anniversaries, capital campaigns, mission initiatives, leadership milestones, and community outreach events all create opportunities to commemorate God's faithfulness.

Rather than creating a keepsake that sits on a shelf, a custom Bible becomes a meaningful resource people can use every day.

3. Strengthen Church Identity

Custom Bibles can help unite a congregation around a shared mission.

When members, leaders, volunteers, and new believers receive the same Bible, it creates a sense of connection and belonging centered on Scripture.

4. Extend the Impact of Your Outreach

An outreach event may last a day. A Bible can impact a life for decades.

A customized Bible serves as an ongoing reminder of both God's truth and the local church that invested in someone's spiritual journey.

What Could a Custom Bible Look Like at Your Church?

You don't have to be celebrating a major anniversary to benefit from a custom Bible project.

Consider using custom Bibles for:

  • Guest welcome programs
  • Baptisms
  • New believer gifts
  • Community outreach events
  • Local missions initiatives
  • Church plants
  • Student ministry milestones
  • Volunteer appreciation
  • Leadership development programs
  • Christmas and Easter outreach
  • Church-wide Bible reading plans

The goal isn't simply to create something branded.

The goal is to create a Bible people will read, study, treasure, and share.

If Shoreline's story sparked ideas for your own ministry, here's a practical way to start exploring whether a custom Bible could support an upcoming ministry moment.

Steal This Idea

Choose one upcoming ministry moment and ask:

Could a custom Bible help us extend the impact of this event?

1. Gather a small team.

Brainstorm opportunities where a customized Bible could support your church's mission. Think beyond anniversaries and special celebrations. Consider outreach events, discipleship pathways, volunteer recognition, or new member assimilation.

2. Ask questions like:

  • Who are we trying to reach?
  • What ministry moment are we trying to commemorate?
  • How could a custom Bible help create a deeper connection to God's Word?
  • What message would we want recipients to remember every time they open it?
  • How could this Bible continue impacting lives years from now?

3. Explore the idea gallery.

See how other churches have customized Bibles for outreach, discipleship, milestones, and ministry events.

4. Take a brief quiz.

Clarify your needs and get started with the custom Bible process.

The best outreach resources don't end when the event ends.

A custom Bible gives people something they can return to again and again—discovering God's truth while remembering the church that helped place it in their hands.

And that's an investment that can continue bearing fruit for generations.
